GEB 6215: GRADUATE BUSINESS COMMUNICATION APPLICATIONS

Graduate Business Communication Applications is required of all MBA, MAc and MTax students and is available only to these students. Students must register for these credits during their first semester. MBA students must receive a satisfactory grade (an "S") within three active semesters. MAc/MTax students must receive a satisfactory grade within one active semester of taking ACG 6135.

Weekly Class Sessions

Students engage in intensive skill-building simulations designed to accomplish three goals: (a) to demonstrate to students that communication is a means through which they accomplish goals; (b) to train students to communicate strategically--to understand that the conventions of format, organization, language, and even some mechanics as well as manner and dress are driven by each communication's purpose and audience; and (c) to train students to assess their own communication abilities. Students assess their own abilities (their written work, audiotapes of their interpersonal interactions, and videotapes of their oral presentations) as well as receive feedback from peers and instructors.

Students must submit post-tests demonstrating their ability to: (a) write clear, concise and convincing memos, letters, proposals, or reports--individually and collaboratively; (b) interact effectively with individuals or groups to convey information and win support for ideas; present dynamically before groups to convey information and win support for ideas; and assess self- and peer-performance across a set of critical communication functions to identify strengths and offer alternative, positive suggestions for weaknesses.

Integrated Written Assignments:

Time varies depending upon each student's writing ability.  MBA students submit an academic research paper and a portfolio piece from any of their core courses. MAc/MTax students submit their ACG 6135 research paper. These papers are evaluated in terms of fulfilling the assignment's course-specific purpose and addressing its audience, and the paper's content, organization, and development; clarity and conciseness; language usage; grammar, punctuation, and spelling; and format.

Students receive specific feedback as to the strengths and developmental areas of their papers. Students then revise the papers accordingly.

Integrated Oral Presentations:

Time varies depending upon each student's presentational ability.

MBA students are required to present in almost all the core courses. MAc/MTax students must present in their ACG 6135 course. Students are observed and evaluated in terms of how well the presentation fulfills the course-specific purpose and meets the specific audience's needs; the presentation's organization, development, visual supports; and, the student's ability to use effective bodily actions and vocal cues to maintain interest, establish rapport, convey clear messages, and influence thought and action.

Students receive an evaluation sheet containing specific ratings supported by behavioral examples. One-on-one coaching is provided to students who receive low ratings.
